1.3 John Hamilton Ltd

Rarity:
Published: Early 1933
Casing: Hardback
Pages: 259

Dark blue cloth with titles in gold on the spine only. The 'Sundial' logo appears at the base of the spine. Dustjacket by Howard Leigh, illustrated by WE Johns (unattributed), but no frontispiece. Width approximately 39mm, printed by Kemp Hall Press. Page tops tinted black. Catalogue lists Camels Are Coming at 7/6. Priced at 7s 6d, with a 16pp catalogue "SPRING LIST OF SUNDIAL EDITIONS 1933" at the rear. (Also a copy with width of 34mm). Author is Flying Officer W.E. Johns.

There is a degree of confusion over when this title first appeared in the Ace Series. There are two references listing possible reprints: October? 1933 (listed in Popular Flying October 1933 as an Ace Series title at 3s 6d), and April 1934 (listed by The English Catalogue of Books as printed April 1934 at 3s 6d). However I believe that the title was first printed as an Ace Series title either concomitant with Biggles Flies Again or (more probably) slightly later. Catalogues from 1935 Hamilton titles show both Biggles Flies Again and The Camels Are Coming as newly released in the Ace Series. The Camels Are Coming is also listed at number 18 in the Ace Series titles (after Biggles Flies Again and prior to The Black Peril). [I Nouwens]
